All my life, but like this, basically started at the beginning of last season when i bought my Cowan. I did ride the year before, but manuals, endo's and catwalks don't really count in my books.
Edit* Welcome to UBike, have some fun while your here. If you ever wants some quality photos taken of yourself riding, pm or email our admin (Juan) about group session we or you are having. We would be glad to come out and have some fun.

IMO, progression depends solely on how comfortable you feel with what you are doing. Biking is all about pushing your limits, and hitting big jumps has alot to do with just going for it, and not thinking about it...of corse while doing this, keep what you are doing within a reasonable size etc.
I would say, for anyone, start off with; catwalks, endo's and bunnyhops. Moderate sized "table" dirt jumps and drops/gaps. After you feel comfortable with doing this, move on to; Manuals, barspins (on flat land or off curbs etc etc), larger dirt jumps (maybe gap dj's)...soon enough, you will be hitting up local parks.
Get out to your local skate park, and just ride it, flow around the park...
The number one thing to do with anything on a bike is your balence factor, everything is done in some way through how you can balence and handle your bike. If you bike is larger than it should be, than jumps and things of that nature are not the best idea. Though many disagree, bikes do change a riders performance greatly.
Beyond all this though, just go out everyday that you can, and enjoy riding, enjoy what you are doing and everything else will fall into place.
